Lesson focus

You should remember that Verskoon my, or "Excuse me," is always the first thing to say when asking for information. After saying Verskoon my, which means “Excuse me”, you should say Hoeveel kos dit?, which means "How much does this cost?"
(slow) Hoeveel kos dit?
Hoeveel kos dit?
First we have Hoeveel, which means "how much" or "how many."
(slow) hoeveel
hoeveel
Next, we have kos, the verb meaning “to cost.”
(slow) kos
kos
At the end, we have dit meaning “this.”
(slow) dit
dit
Altogether, we have Hoeveel kos dit? meaning “How much does this cost?”
(slow) Hoeveel kos dit?
Hoeveel kos dit?
This is the perfect question when you don't know the name of the object you're trying to buy. You can just point at it and say, Hoeveel kos dit?, which means"How much does this cost?"
However, if you know the name of the object you want to buy, you can be very specific. For example, if you want to buy a particular t-shirt, it’s better to ask "How much is this t-shirt?"
In Afrikaans, that is Hoeveel kos hierdie t-hemp?
(slow) Hoeveel kos hierdie t-hemp?
Hoeveel kos hierdie t-hemp?
First, we have Hoeveel kos, literally meaning “how much cost.”
(slow) Hoeveel kos
Hoeveel kos
Next, we have hierdie t-hemp meaning “this t-shirt.” It has the pronoun hierdie meaning “this.”
(slow) hierdie t-hemp
hierdie t-hemp
What if you want to ask about shoes, and say “How much are these shoes?” In Afrikaans, that is Hoeveel kos hierdie skoene?
(slow) Hoeveel kos hierdie skoene?
Hoeveel kos hierdie skoene?
In this sentence we have the noun skoene, which means “shoes.”

Hi EmilyAnn Frances May!

You're doing a great job with your Afrikaans! 🌟 Here are a few corrections to help you out:

1. Verskoon my, hoeveel kos hierdie t-hemp? - This sentence is perfect! Well done! 🎉

2. Verskoon my, hoeveel kos daardie romp? - This sentence is also correct. Great work! 👏

3. Verskoon my, hoeveel kos dit brood? - In this sentence, it should be "daardie" instead of "dit". So, it should be: "Verskoon my, hoeveel kos daardie brood?" (Excuse me, how much does that bread cost?)

Keep up the fantastic work, and feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Dankie (Thank you),

I will try:

Verskoon my, hoeveel kos hierdie t-hemp?

Verskoon my, hoeveel kos daardie romp?

Verskoon my, hoeveel kos dit brood?

Good day, I am a complete beginner. I'm starting out with the Survival Phrases to ease into Afrikaans. In this lesson the word 'kos' is used to mean the verb 'to cost'. Yet in the review audio the word 'koste' is used. Please explain the difference and how they are used.

Can you also recommend an Afrikaans-English/English-Afrikaans online dictionary that has audio bytes for each word, along with the definite article, verb conjugations, comparatives, etc. I'm looking for something geared to students. If not in English-Afrikaans/Afrikaans-English than Nederlands-Afrikaans/Afrikaans-Nederlands. As an example, the van Dale NT2 Op School Nederlands dictionary.

Baie dankie!

Hello. A question from an Australian learning Afrikaans:

The word kos apparently means food, according to my translator app. "Hoeveel kos" becomes "how much food". How does it then become "cost" in this context, please?"
