| Eric: When you live in a country for a long period of time, you will develop your personal Top 5 pet phrases. This lesson is a shortcut, as we’ll introduce five popular phrases that locals use a lot! They're kind of like the "cool" and "awesome" of English. You'll fit right in when you throw them into conversation. |
| Pieter: First we’ll list them and then go into more detail. Okay, here we go. Jammer om te pla! |
| Eric: “So sorry to bother you!” |
| Pieter: Geen probleem nie. |
| Eric: "It's nothing." or "Don't worry about it." |
| Pieter: Waar is die toilet? |
| Eric: "Where is the toilet?" |
| Pieter: Laat ons gaan! |
| Eric: "Let's go!" |
| Pieter Rêrig? |
| Eric "Really?" Okay, let's take a closer look at how to use these notable Afrikaans expressions. |
| Pieter: Here’s pet phrase number one. Jammer om te pla! |
| Eric: Basically, this is a polite way of getting someone's attention by saying "I am so sorry to bother you! |
| Pieter: Yes, Jammer om te pla! |
| Eric: This is generally used when you want to ask someone a favor or even when you’re just asking for directions. |
| Pieter: So, for example, maybe I would ask you for directions and start off by saying Jammer om te pla! Waar is die poskantoor? |
| Eric: "I’m so sorry to bother you. Where is the post office?" |
| Pieter: And now for pet phrase number two. Geen probleem nie. |
| Eric: It's the Afrikaans equivalent of "Forget about it!" or "No problem." |
| Pieter: So, for example, if someone steps on your foot, you can say geen probleem nie. |
| Eric: Or if anything weird happens, just say.. |
| Pieter: geen probleem nie. |
| Eric: Okay, what’s pet phrase number three. |
| Pieter: Waar is die toilet? |
| Eric: It means “Where is the toilet?” I believe this an ultimate lifesaver! |
| Pieter: Yes, not knowing how to ask for directions to the toilet can feel like a matter of life and death! |
| Eric: Okay, now onto number four. |
| Pieter: Pet phrase number four. Laat ons gaan! |
| Eric: It means “Let’s go!” |
| Pieter: Yeah. Laat means “let,” ons means “us,” and gaan means “go.” |
| Eric: Let’s say it's a perfect day today. If your friend asks you to go to the beach, you can say... |
| Pieter: Laat ons gaan! |
| Eric: Okay. And pet phrase number five? |
| Pieter: Rêrig? |
| Eric: It means "Really?" |
| Pieter: Rêrig! |
| Eric: This phrase can be used when you want to express surprise or doubt, just like how we would use "Really?" in English! It’s very natural Afrikaans. Well, those are our favorite phrases in Afrikaans. |
