INTRODUCTION
Alisha: Agreeing or Disagreeing With Someone
Alisha: Hi everyone, and welcome back to AfrikaansPod101.com. I'm Alisha.
Dewan: And I'm Dewan!
Alisha: This is Must-Know Afrikaans Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 4. In this lesson you'll learn Agreeing or Disagreeing With Someone.
Alisha: Afrikaans is a language full of double positives and negatives. Agreement also comes across as disagreement sometimes.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Alisha: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Dewan: yebo
Dewan: aikona
Dewan: nè?
Dewan: ja, nee
Alisha: Dewan, what's our first expression?
Dewan: yebo
Alisha: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "yes."
Dewan: [SLOW] yebo [NORMAL] yebo
Alisha: Listeners, please repeat.
Dewan: yebo
[pause - 5 sec.]
Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to expressively agree with someone or to something. It is often used as a double positive, as in 'yebo-yes'.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Dewan: [NORMAL] Yebo, dit is heeltemal reg met my. [SLOW] Yebo, dit is heeltemal reg met my.
Alisha: "Yes, it is totally fine with me."
Dewan: [NORMAL] Yebo, dit is heeltemal reg met my.
Alisha: Okay, what's the next expression?
Dewan: aikona
Alisha: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "no."
Dewan: [SLOW] aikona [NORMAL] aikona
Alisha: Listeners, please repeat.
Dewan: aikona
[pause - 5 sec.]
Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to express shock or disbelief. It is originally a Zulu term.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Dewan: [NORMAL] Aikona, dit kan nie so aanhou nie. [SLOW] Aikona, dit kan nie so aanhou nie.
Alisha: "No, it cannot continue like this."
Dewan: [NORMAL] Aikona, dit kan nie so aanhou nie.
Alisha: Okay, what's our next expression?
Dewan: nè?
Alisha: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "right?"
Dewan: [SLOW] nè? [NORMAL] nè?
Alisha: Listeners, please repeat.
Dewan: nè?
[pause - 5 sec.]
Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to ask someone if they agree with you or know what you mean.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Dewan: [NORMAL] Dit is moes so, nè? [SLOW] Dit is moes so, nè?
Alisha: "It is true, right?"
Dewan: [NORMAL] Dit is moes so, nè?
Alisha: Okay, what's the last expression?
Dewan: ja, nee
Alisha: This literally means "yes, no." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "yeah."
Dewan: [SLOW] ja, nee [NORMAL] ja, nee
Alisha: Listeners, please repeat.
Dewan: ja, nee
[pause - 5 sec.]
Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to agree with someone or confirm what they have said. It is interesting as the words 'ja' and 'nee' seem like they are contradicting each other.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Dewan: [NORMAL] Ja, nee. Ek stem heeltemal saam. [SLOW] Ja, nee. Ek stem heeltemal saam.
Alisha: "Yeah. I completely agree."
Dewan: [NORMAL] Ja, nee. Ek stem heeltemal saam.
QUIZ
Alisha: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I will describe four situations, and you will choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
Alisha: You really want to express that you do not agree with something or someone.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Dewan: aikona
Alisha: "no"
Alisha: You are happy with something and want to express your approval.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Dewan: yebo
Alisha: "yes"
Alisha: You are disappointed and agree with someone's summary of the situation.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Dewan: ja, nee
Alisha: "yeah"
Alisha: You are surprised and want to confirm what you’ve heard is correct.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Dewan: nè?
Alisha: "right?"
